returning boomerangs may have been used to flush out bird prey (to subsequently use the hunting throw sticks on).

indeed. and plus, if boomerang was used for hunting, it wouldn't return anyway, once it hits the target or comes into physical contact with anything at a force enough to disable or kill the target.
