Traditional Latin Catholic Mass: Easter Sunday

Traditional Latin Mass filmed on Easter Sunday in 1941 at Our Lady of Sorrows church in Chicago. The film presents the ceremonies of the Missa Solemnis or Solemn High Mass in full detail with narration by then-Mgr. Fulton J. Sheen. Celebrated by Rev. J. R. Keane of the Order of Servites (hence the white habits and cowls), the ceremonies are accompanied by a full polyphonic choir, orchestra, and fifty Gregorian Chanters. The attention to detail in the ceremonies is impressive. Notice, for example, how the servers and ministers always take great care to move in order. Notice too that the servers are all almost identical in height. The Ordinary of the Mass, composed by Rev. Edwin V. Hoover, while pleasant in places, is very much a reflection of its time. The Proper on the other hand is timeless and sung admirably by a healthy throng of Seminarians from Mundelein, Illinois.Unfortunately due to size restrictions at Youtube around 20 mins have been cut from the original, however, I hope to upload a full version somewhere soon. In addition to the cuts I have added new captions and edited the opening credits which had deteriorated in the original. Other than this the film remains largely unchanged. Apologies for the error in the captions for the two parts of the Mass (software). The first part is of couse the Mass of the Catechumens, the second is the Mass of the Faithful.

Cardinal Hoyos said "...The important thing is that in this moment, priests can decide, without permission from the Holy See or the bishop, to celebrate the Mass in the ancient rite. And this holds true for all priests. It is the parish priests who must open the doors to those priests that, having the faculty, go to celebrate. It is not therefore necessary to ask any other permission." In essence, there are Bishops who are, unlawfully, impeding the celebration of this Mass.

"continued again...Else we behave like emperor Nero, fiddling on his violin while Rome was burning. The churches are emptying, there are no vocations, the seminaries are empty. Priests become older and older, and young priests are scarce.

continued"...Even not if they were made by a bishops conference. Even bishops do not have this right. What the Holy Fathers says, has to be obeyed in the Church. If we do not follow this principle, we will allow ourselves to be used as instruments of the devil, and nobody else. This will lead to discord in the Church, and slows down her mission. We do not have the time to waste on this..."

If you're looking for more encouragement, as quoted from Fr. Z's blog, this is from Archbishop Malcom Ranjith (Secretary for the Congregation of Divine Worship, etc)The motu proprio Summorum Pontificum on the Latin Liturgy of July 7th 2007 is the fruit of a deep reflection by our Pope on the mission of the Church. It is not up to us, who wear ecclesiastical purple and red, to draw this into question, to be disobedient and make the motu proprio void by our own little, tittle rules....

If you're looking for more encouragementFrom summorum PontificumIt is, therefore, permissible to celebrate the Sacrifice of the Mass following the typical edition of the Roman Missal promulgated by Bl. John XXIII in 1962 and never abrogated, as an extraordinary form of the Liturgy of the Church. So your priest is able to celebrate this Mass.

Actually, it is not your priest who is being disobedient, for he is obeying what the Holy Father desires, it is in fact the Bishop who is being disobedient to the Holy Father's wishes. Any priest has the right to say the traditional Mass, the Bishop is not to impede this in any way.

From summorum PontificumIt is, therefore, permissible to celebrate the Sacrifice of the Mass following the typical edition of the Roman Missal promulgated by Bl. The conditions for the use of this Missal as laid down by earlier documents 'Quattuor abhinc annis' and 'Ecclesia Dei,' are substituted as follows:

Actually, as per Summorum Pontificum (our Holy Father's document on the traditional Mass) this Mass has never been abrogated and any attempt to do so by ecclesiastical authority is illegal. Any priest, without permission from the Archbishop is allowed to say the traditional Mass. Actually, Cardinal Hoyos (president of Ecclessia Dei) said that the Pope desires this Mass "in not many parishes, but all parishes."

My priest's friend name is Father Bob Massey, and he is very reverent in the way he celebrates his English Masses. His Masses are truly the English counterpart of a Latin Mass, and he is extremely reverent. So, people should shut their mouths when it comes to Father Massey, and his English masses.................he is my friend, and he does have reverence. I like the Latin Mass, I really do - but I also think I have a right to defend Father Massey, also.

Some Traditionalists have been accusing my priest friend of being a heretic, and even a schismatic, because he does not celebrate this Mass. They even challenged me to who's side to take. As much as I do have reverence for this Mass, I believe that in this case, that the Traditionalists were wrong in attacking my friend.Yes, I came to his defense, and it is not his fault that he cannot celebrate this Mass.............it is forbidden these days. These traditionalists were wrong.
