the year 1984 was based on a novel called 1984 written in 1948. the year the Macintosh was released was in 1984, so the idea was that in 1984(the novel) people's ideas, information thoughts, etc... were all controlled, and the mac would destroy this control of information. So after the mac, people would have free speech and free opinions, which in someways, is a reference to the internet.
