Viruses are most definitely introduced into the OS by the user - Dont blame the OS. Like Chris mentioned "Questionable websites" (porn and warez) are the most likely places.Chris' five steps are good, but he forgot to mention not opening up email attachments unless it's from a know source.

when windows is first installed DEFRAG it will run 25 -35% faster and after a large program is installed (it puts all the os files on the fastest part of the Hard Drive that are always needed

the question was "does apple os x" has available viruses? and what to do about it... dude if u ask me... getting a virus in an apple is far from a virus on a windows based pc.. the reason is because ur chances are 1-500 <--"just an example" u will download viruses... a LOT of em.. but its like putting a human virus on an alien it might not work. and most of the time it doesn't. but one of those 100 will be the real deal, then u are infected. if i was u i wouldn't be so afraid.

It's plain simple. With a Mac, you can just use a free av and get 99.9% of security, at least until some new malware appears, and gets immediately detected. With Windows, even if you use the best av you won't reach more than 80% of protection. That is unless you install tons of IDS and HIPS software with tons of popups for every single action.
